Umbrian Festivals 2016 My favourites.

Below is a summary of my favourites with dates but look out for individual blogs for more details and links.Umbria is NOT good at advertising itself but then that is why it retains its charm!!

FESTA dei BARBARI. (Picture above)

Castel Rigone   4th to 7th August. 2016.

The BEST!!

Always on for four days and the last day ..a Sunday always the first Sunday in August.

Every evening there is a market with a difference which takes you back to the days that Castel Rigone was inhabited by the Barbarians. The Ostogoths!

Sit in the piazza enjoying a feast of Chingiale or Stinco di Maiale  and unlimited wine , surrounded by fire eaters and musicians and very enthusiastic jousters!

On the Sunday afternoon there is a costume procession and the ‘palio’ a challenge which is different each year!


Festa Tulipano. (Tulip Festival) Castiglione del Lago Aoril. The last day (Sunday) is the main event day. Floats decorated with thousands of tulips from five neighbourhoods. Marching bands. Tavernas. Street actors in costume playing ancient games.

Coloriami I Cielli (‘colour the skies’) The annual kite festival in Castiglione del Lago

29th April to the 1st of May.

Thousands of incredible kites in all shapes and forms plus hot air balloons take to the skies making an amazing spectacle set against the beautiful Umbrian landscape.

Calendimaggio. AssisI

First week of May.

Assisi spends all year preparing for this amazing Festa. Definitely not to be missed.Assisi’s colourful and lively Spring Festival when the two kves of the town challenge each other suing three days of costumed pageanty, medieval enactments, concerts, archery, jousting and more! Here is a breathtaking show on the Saturday in the main piazza. Tickets need to be purchased well in advance for this show.

Citta della Pieve

Every year in the basement of the Palazzo Orca “living paintings’ or ‘Quadri Vivente’ can be viewed. These depict scenes of the Easter Story. The lighting is atmospheric, provided by torches and candles held by forty figures. The paintings are reproductions of 16 and 17th century works of art.

18-19 June

The main streets of this ancient city are decorated with paintings made from flower petals. Beautiful !

There is also a lively market, music and feasting.

Trasimeno Music Festival

30th June to 6th July

This classical music festival consists of concerts held in halls all over the area.

it is ranked as one of the most prestigious musical festivals in Europe.

Passignano sul Trasimeno

FANTASTIC!  Not to be missed. Have seen it at least ten times and never fail to enjoy!

23rd July to 31st July

The last day – Sunday is the best.

It is a competition of boats with a difference !

The race is on the lake AND by foot carrying the boats through the narrow streets of the town!

Stay on in the evening to eat outside in the piazza and witness the celebrations of the winning team.

Also ‘burning of the castle’ ..not really ! Markets. Food. Wine. Etc.

Festival Internazionale dei Giovani Concertisti

SO atmospheric !

Sit in a romantic piazza under the trees decorated with fairy lights.

Buy a drink from the bar in the adjacent piazza and be transported by beautiful melodies to a time gone by.

Go early and enjoy exploring this small but exquisite medieval town.

Italians enjoying themselves in their very unique way.

The whole town is cut off from traffic from late afternoon to sunrise. . Restaurants and bars spread over the roads. Markets and food stalls everywhere. Live music everywhere.  Fashion shows, concerts, crafts …you name it and they’ve got it!!

What they haven’t got is good marketing!! No date as yet!!

10-21 August.

Challenges between the different parts of the town culminating in the afternoon of the last day …Sunday .. In the most amazing procession . Where else will you get to within touching distance of huge gentle oxen and have canons shit off right in front if your!  Not to mention amazing costumes, lots of great bands and entertainment. Stay on and enjoy eating in one of the tavernas.
